An earth drill is the quietest way to destroy an excavator circuit. A breaker announces its problems with noise and heat; an auger simply stalls, and the operator answers the stall with more pressure. By the time the drive head seals are weeping, the relief has usually been wrong for months. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies the circuit-side parts that decide whether an auger lasts, and the pattern of failures is consistent enough to write down.
What is actually inside a drive head
Most excavator earth drills use a hydraulic motor — gerotor or geroller type — bolted to a planetary reduction, with the output coupled to the auger by a hex or round shank. Larger heads add a two-speed shift, a mechanical holding brake, and a case drain port. Every one of those features changes what the circuit must supply. A head with a case drain that is plugged, or plumbed back into a return line with standing back pressure, will push oil past its shaft seal and into the gearbox. That is the most common auger failure that is not the operator's fault.
Torque, speed and the number buyers get wrong
Torque and speed trade against each other, and the auger diameter sets the torque requirement before the machine does. A 300 mm flight in firm clay and a 600 mm flight in the same clay are different jobs; the second needs roughly the torque of the first multiplied by the increase in cutting area, and no amount of engine speed recovers a torque shortfall. Two-speed heads exist precisely because the same machine has to spin a small flight fast in soft ground and a large flight slowly in stiff ground.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Head stalls in clay at half depth | Relief set below head rating, or worn motor | Relief setting against the head's own specification, not the machine's |
| Slow from the first turn | Undersized hose, collapsed liner, restricted quick coupler | Hose bore, fitting bore, coupler bore — all three |
| Oil in the gearbox | Case drain blocked or pressurised | Separate unrestricted drain to tank |
| Head runs hot at idle flow | Continuous flow through a closed-centre circuit | Correct circuit selection and relief path |
The circuit: where the money is actually spent
Three parts of the circuit decide head life. The relief valve protects the head, so it is set to the head maker's figure, not to the machine's main relief. The return path has to be free: a case drain teed into a line that already carries return flow is a seal failure waiting for a warm day. And the quick coupler, if one is used, must pass the full flow without a step; a coupler rated for a breaker's intermittent flow will throttle an auger that runs continuously.
Our records quote one main relief valve under three marks — V9510318049-T, LP22V00001F1 and YN22V00004F1 — which is normal for Kobelco assemblies and a frequent source of confusion when a buyer compares two sellers' lists. For the 20-tonne class the pump assembly is 2924610-0030 / YN10V00005S156. Confirm the relief against the attachment, not against the pump.
Ask the head maker for two numbers, then quote the machine. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. needs the head's rated flow, rated pressure and whether it requires a case drain, plus the machine model and serial. A drive head matched on flow alone will stall in the first hard layer, and 3,000+ part types on the shelf will not fix a relief setting.
Tooling wears faster than the head
The wear parts on an auger are cheap individually and expensive collectively. Conical teeth and their holders take the abrasion; the pilot point centres the hole and takes the shock; the flights wear thin at the outer edge where the tip speed is highest; the coupling shank and its retaining pin wear oval and introduce backlash that the gearbox feels as impact. A crew that replaces teeth on condition and checks the coupling every job gets several times the life out of a head compared with one that waits for the flight to wear through.
Ground conditions decide the tooth pattern more than machine size does. Rock requires a pilot and heavy conical teeth; stiff clay rewards a flat-edged flight with a sharp leading edge; sand and gravel punish anything that does not clear spoil fast enough, which is a flight-pitch question rather than a hydraulic one.
Buying the right pieces
Hose and fittings come first, because a collapsed liner mimics a tired motor. Our records hold YN52S00023P1 / YN52S00012P1 for the hydraulic side; check bore and length against the head's port before ordering. The hydraulic components page groups pumps, valves and motors, and the attachment flow matching guide covers the relief and hose sizing logic that applies to any powered attachment. If you are matching an auger to a specific machine, start from the SK200 model page.
For heads and tooling we do not stock, send the head plate and the auger diameter and we will quote what is available through original channels. Kobelco's published attachment guidance at kobelco.co.jp is a reasonable cross-check for approved attachment classes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my auger stall even though the machine has full hydraulic pressure?
Pressure is not flow. An auger needs flow at pressure, and a collapsed hose liner, an undersized coupler or a relief set below the head rating will stall it while the main system still reads normal. Check hose bore, coupler bore and the relief setting against the drive head's specification before suspecting the motor.
Does an auger drive head need a case drain?
Many do, and the drain must run separately to tank without standing back pressure. Teeing it into a return line that already carries flow pressurises the motor case and pushes oil past the shaft seal into the gearbox. If the head has a drain port, give it its own path.
What wears first on an excavator auger?
Teeth and tooth holders, then the pilot point, then the flight edge where tip speed is highest, then the coupling shank and retaining pin. Coupling wear is the expensive one because oval wear introduces impact loading that the planetary reduction has to absorb.
Can Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. match a drive head to my machine?
Yes, if you send the head's rated flow, rated pressure, case-drain requirement and the machine model and serial. Our records hold hydraulic hose and relief valve numbers such as YN52S00023P1 and V9510318049-T, but the relief setting must follow the attachment manufacturer's figure, not the machine's.
