Kobelco Battery and Charging System: Slow Cranking, Dead Batteries and the Alternator Behind Them

Slow cranking and repeated dead batteries on SK-series machines are usually a charging-system story, not a battery story. How to read the symptoms, and the alternator numbers to quote.

A 6D34-family alternator — A3TN5188RQ / VAME017614 — from the warehouse shelf.

A machine that cranks slowly on Monday morning gets a new battery. When it cranks slowly again on Friday, it gets another battery. By the third battery, someone finally measures the charging voltage — and finds the alternator has been under-charging for months, killing every battery it was given. This is one of the most common electrical stories we hear from SK-series owners, and it is almost always a charging problem wearing a battery costume.

Read the symptoms in the right order

Start at the dashboard, not the parts counter. A healthy charging system on these machines shows roughly 27 to 28 volts across the batteries with the engine running — the SK electrical system is 24 volts, charged from an alternator through the machine harness. If running voltage sits at battery level (around 24 to 25 volts), the alternator is not charging. If it sits well above 29 volts, the regulator is overcharging, which cooks batteries just as surely as undercharging starves them. Both conditions look identical at the key: a machine that cranks poorly.

Why alternators fail early on excavators

Excavators are hard on alternators in ways trucks are not. The engine compartment breathes dust, hydraulic oil mist and pressure-washer water. Vibration works the mounting bracket and the pulley. And on machines with long idle periods — site machines waiting for trucks, breakers hammering all day at low engine speed — the alternator spends its life at the low end of its output curve while the batteries take the load. The result is a predictable failure pattern: brushes and slip rings wear, the regulator drifts, bearings get noisy, and charging voltage sags long before the unit stops completely.

The numbers to quote

When the diagnosis is settled, the part number is the next step. On 6D34-powered machines the alternator is commonly quoted as A3TN5188RQ, with the component-side number VAME017614 — the Mitsubishi-style marking on the housing. On the smaller D04FR machines such as the SK130-8, the alternator is commonly quoted as VA32G6800100. For Hino J05E/J08E-powered machines the alternator carries Hino-family numbers such as VH270402500A. As always on this site: quote the number from your unit's housing, because two alternators that look alike can differ in pulley, plug and output.

Batteries deserve one paragraph of their own

When the charging system is healthy and batteries still die, look at the batteries themselves — but with a multimeter, not a guess. A battery that reads full voltage at rest but collapses under cranking load has lost capacity, and no alternator will save it. Check the terminals and the ground strap to the frame while you are there; corroded connections on a 24-volt series pair waste exactly the voltage a cold start needs. And on machines that sit for weeks, a disconnect switch or a maintenance charger is cheaper than two batteries a year.

Before you order
