The Kobelco Walk-Around: What to Check Before the First Bucket of the Shift

Most Kobelco failures announce themselves before the shift starts. The ten-minute walk-around, what each check is really looking for, and the parts waiting behind a failed check.

Genuine Japanese-made pins for Kobelco machines — pin and bushing lubrication is a daily walk-around item
Genuine Japanese-made pins from our Guangzhou stock — pin and bushing lubrication points are exactly what the daily walk-around checklist covers.

Almost every expensive Kobelco failure was visible before the shift in which it happened. A weeping hose end, a track that had gone slack, a coolant level dropping a litre a day, a battery terminal furred white — none of those are hidden faults, and all of them are found in ten minutes with the engine cold. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has supplied Kobelco parts since 2007 and has seen which shortcuts end in a rebuild, so this guide is the walk-around worth doing rather than a generic checklist.

Why a walk-around pays

An excavator gives warning in three ways: it leaks something, it loses something, or it makes a noise. A cold machine shows leaks that a hot one hides behind steam and oil mist, so a visual check before starting catches all three for the price of a coffee break. The same ten minutes also establishes a baseline, so a change — a new drip, a slightly darker exhaust, a track with more slack than yesterday — is noticed as a change rather than quietly accepted as normal.

The three checks that catch the expensive faults

Three checks repay the routine more than all the others. The first is the ground under the machine: a fresh patch of oil or coolant tells you a seal or a hose end has started to fail, and it does so weeks before the failure becomes a burst. The second is track tension, because a track that has gone slack damages the sprocket, the idler and the track frame together and turns a cheap adjustment into an undercarriage bill. The third is coolant level together with the condition of the belts and the cooler fins, because overheating is the one fault that can destroy an engine inside a single shift. The filters and lubricants range covers the consumables behind these checks, and the machine model pages cover the machines themselves.

The checks owners skip

Two checks get skipped most often because nothing goes wrong immediately when they do. The first is the fuel water separator, where water sits at the bottom, corrodes the housing and then reaches the injection system — draining it is a thirty-second job that prevents a fuel system repair. The second is the battery terminal and the charging system, where a furred terminal or a weakening alternator is discovered on a cold morning when the machine will not start. The electrical parts range covers the sensors and controllers behind the monitor, and any stored fault code seen during the walk-around should be written down with the hour meter rather than cleared unread.

Shenyue tip: keep one sheet with the date, the hour meter, the oil and coolant levels, the track tension and any new drip, and photograph the sheet weekly. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. reads those sheets to separate a slowly developing fault from a one-off, and quotes the filter, hose or sensor lines involved with each grade — genuine, OEM-quality or aftermarket — declared up front.

What the walk-around cannot tell you

A walk-around finds what is leaking, loose or slack. It cannot find what is wearing internally: a pump losing efficiency, a bearing beginning to pit, or water and metal suspended in the oil. Those need oil sampling and the scheduled service, which is why the walk-around is the daily layer of a maintenance plan, not a substitute for it.

Making the routine stick

A walk-around survives only if it is quick and it is recorded. Ten minutes with the engine cold, a sheet that takes a minute to fill in, and one rule — a failed check is written down before the machine starts — are enough. Where a machine has already produced a symptom, the clips on our video library show the components being examined with the part number on screen, so identification can be done by the same person doing the walk-around. Where a number cannot be confirmed from our records it is quoted as commonly quoted, with the nameplate treated as the authority. Mixed-brand fleets will find the equivalent consumables in the all-brand range at excavatorpartsglobal.com.

How we supply

Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has specialised in Kobelco since 2007, with 4 warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels. Shenyue is an independent supplier and is not an authorized dealer of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; for Kobelco, Hino, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins, Kawasaki, Nabtesco, KYB and KPM we supply genuine parts ordered through original supply channels alongside quality replacement alternatives, at prices close to agent level, and the five brands we hold formal authorization for — Mitsubishi, Garrett, TONGMYUNG, Marusan and NIKURA — are named on every quotation. Published Kobelco maintenance information is a useful cross-reference when an interval has to be confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Kobelco walk-around take?

About ten minutes with the engine cold, covering fluids, leaks, undercarriage, electrical, and the air and cooling system. Record the date, the hour meter and any change on a single sheet — the value of the routine is in the comparison with yesterday, not in the checks themselves.

What is the single most important daily check on an excavator?

The ground under the machine. A fresh patch of oil or coolant shows a seal or a hose end beginning to fail weeks before it bursts, and it is the cheapest early warning available. Track tension and coolant level follow closely, because both faults become expensive very quickly.

My Kobelco smokes a little on cold start. Should I be worried?

A short puff of light smoke on a cold start is normal on a cold engine. Persistent black smoke under load, or white or blue smoke that continues once warm, is not — those point at intake and boost leaks, or at oil and fuel. Compare against yesterday rather than against a specification.

How do I turn a walk-around into a parts plan?

Keep the sheet, note which checks fail and which consumables get used, and send a month of sheets with the machine list. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. then builds a stock list around what the machines actually consume, with each line's grade declared.
