Exhaust smoke is the only diagnostic on an excavator that the operator can read without tools, and it is consistently ignored. Colour plus the conditions in which it appears narrows an engine fault to two or three systems before a spanner is picked up. On Hino-powered Kobelco machines — J05E in the 20-tonne class, J08E and P11C further up — the pattern is consistent enough to be useful. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes the parts behind these symptoms weekly, and this guide is the order we recommend testing them in.

Read the colour, then read the conditions

Colour on its own is not a diagnosis. Smoke at cold start, smoke under load, smoke when the machine is hot, and smoke that never clears are four different stories. Record when it happens, whether it worsens with load or with temperature, and whether fluid consumption has changed. An engine that burns no oil or coolant but smokes black under load has a fuel-and-air problem; an engine losing coolant and smoking white has a sealing problem; an engine losing oil and smoking blue has a wear problem.

Black smoke: air and fuel out of balance

Black smoke is unburned fuel: too much fuel, or too little air. Work in this order — air filter and intake restriction first, the cheapest check and the most common cause on dusty sites; then boost pressure, since a turbocharger that is not boosting or a leaking charge-air joint leaves the fuel without air; then the injection side, where a worn or seating injector over-fuels one cylinder. A leaking EGR joint or a blocked cooler shows up the same way, which is why the EGR valve gasket VH25634E0020 is a common item in our stock list.

White smoke: water where it should not be

Thin white vapour on a cold start that clears as the engine warms is normal. Persistent white smoke, especially with a falling coolant level, a bubbling radiator or a sweet smell, means coolant is reaching the combustion chamber. The usual routes are the cylinder head gasket, a cracked head, or an injector sleeve. It also punishes delay: coolant in a cylinder washes oil from the bore, and coolant in the oil damages bearings. Gaskets such as VAME081734 and VH11115E0090 / VH111152870A, and heads such as VH11101E0B60 / VH111014950A, are the parts that follow — and a head should always be pressure-tested before it goes back on.

Blue smoke: oil is being burned

Blue smoke is lubricating oil in the combustion chamber. The three usual routes are worn valve guides and stem seals, tired piston rings with rising crankcase pressure, and turbocharger seals passing oil into the intake or exhaust. The test that separates them costs nothing: check the intake ducting and the exhaust manifold for oil. Oil in the intake points at the turbo; oil seeping past the guides is visible with the manifold off; a compression or blow-by test settles the rings. Piston rings such as VHS130BE0R80 / VHS130BE0391 and injector cover seals such as VH2368178030 / VHS230741070 sit on this side of the diagnosis.

A test order that avoids parts roulette

Test before you strip. Intake restriction, boost pressure, a coolant pressure test, oil consumption against hours and a compression or blow-by reading will usually name the system within an hour of workshop time. Each of those tests is cheaper than the first wrong part, and on a machine that works every day the difference is measured in days of production.

Shenyue tip: quote the whole repair, not the symptom. When a head gasket is being replaced, the gasket set, the head bolts, the injector seals and the coolant are bought together, because the labour is already paid for. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. prices those groups as one quotation, graded line by line.

How we supply

Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has specialised in Kobelco parts since 2007, with 4 warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels. Shenyue is an independent supplier and is not an authorized dealer of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; for Kobelco, Hino, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins, Kawasaki, Nabtesco, KYB and KPM we supply genuine parts ordered through original supply channels alongside quality replacement alternatives, at prices close to agent level, and the five brands we hold formal authorization for — Mitsubishi, Garrett, TONGMYUNG, Marusan and NIKURA — are named on every quotation. Browse engine parts and the SK200 class page; Hino's published engine service information at hino-global.com is a useful cross-reference when a fault is traced back to the engine rather than the machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Kobelco smoke black only when working hard?

Black smoke under load means fuel is going in without enough air to burn it. Check the air filter and intake first, then boost pressure for a turbo or charge-air leak, then the injectors. On machines with exhaust gas recirculation, a leaking EGR joint explains the same symptom, and the EGR valve gasket VH25634E0020 is a commonly quoted item.

Is white smoke always a head gasket?

No. Light white vapour on a cold start that clears is normal. Persistent white smoke with a falling coolant level is the pattern that points to coolant entering a cylinder, usually through the head gasket, a cracked head or an injector sleeve. A pressure test of the cooling system confirms it before any part is bought.

What causes blue smoke on a Hino-powered excavator?

Oil being burned — normally through turbocharger seals, worn valve guides and stem seals, or tired piston rings. Look for oil in the intake ducting and the exhaust manifold first, then take a compression or blow-by reading. Send those results to Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. and the quotation is built around the system that actually failed.

Where should I start before ordering any engine parts?

With five cheap tests: intake restriction, boost pressure, cooling system pressure, oil consumption against engine hours, and compression or blow-by. They usually name the system within an hour of work and cost far less than one wrong part.
