Engine overheating produces more unnecessary parts orders in this trade than any other complaint. A machine runs hot, the water pump gets replaced, and the machine still runs hot, because the pump was never the cause. Coolant temperature is the end of a chain: radiator, cap, thermostat, pump, belt, fan, and the two oil coolers that share the same airflow. Working the chain in order finds the answer in an afternoon instead of three parts. This is the order the technical team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. uses.
First, separate engine heat from hydraulic heat
On an excavator the radiator stack usually carries the engine coolant, the hydraulic oil cooler and the charge air cooler. A machine that runs hot may be rejecting heat from the hydraulic system rather than from the engine, and the two have completely different causes. Check whether coolant temperature is actually high, or whether the hydraulic oil is the fluid overheating and the coolant gauge is following it. Our guide to hydraulic oil overheating covers the second case; this article assumes the coolant itself is hot.
Symptom to likely cause
| What the operator reports | Where to look first |
|---|---|
| Hot at idle and at load, all day | Coolant level and pressure cap, then a blocked core or external debris |
| Normal at idle, hot only under load | Thermostat not opening fully, or a partially blocked core |
| Slow to warm up, then hot | Thermostat sticking, or the wrong thermostat fitted |
| Overheats and pushes coolant out | Pressure cap failed, or combustion gases entering the cooling system |
| Hot after a service | Coolant not bled, or the fan belt tensioned incorrectly |
The test order
- Coolant level and the pressure cap. A cap that no longer holds pressure lowers the boiling point and the machine runs hot with nothing else wrong. Caps from stock include C-22 / YN05P00088S032J / YN05P00010S006J.
- External blockage. Dust and chaff between the cores is the most common cause in quarry and demolition work, and it costs nothing to rule out.
- Thermostat. Test it in a pot before replacing anything else. A thermostat that opens late produces exactly the "hot under load, fine at idle" pattern.
- Fan, belt and fan spacer. Check belt condition and tension, and that the fan is intact and correctly spaced.
- Water pump. Only now. Look for play, weeping at the seal, or an impeller eroded away by cavitation.
- Oil coolers. The engine oil cooler and the hydraulic oil cooler sit in the same airflow and can be internally restricted while looking clean from outside.
What a cooling system actually consumes
Cooling components do not fail suddenly; they degrade. A water pump seal weeps a trace, a thermostat opens a degree late, a cap loses a little pressure, and the machine runs two degrees hotter each season until it boils on the hottest day of the year. The cheapest control is a recorded coolant temperature at every service, so the trend shows up before the failure does. That single number turns cooling from emergency work into planned work.
Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has specialised in Kobelco parts since 2007, with 4 warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels. Shenyue is an independent supplier of excavator parts and is not an authorized dealer or distributor of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; for Kobelco, Hino, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins, Kawasaki, Nabtesco, KYB and KPM we supply genuine parts ordered through original supply channels alongside quality replacement alternatives, at prices close to agent level, and the five brands we hold formal authorization for — Mitsubishi, Garrett, TONGMYUNG, Marusan and NIKURA — are named on every quotation. Browse cooling and air conditioning parts and engine parts, or read the engine reference data published by Hino.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Kobelco runs hot only under load. Where should I start?
Under-load overheating with a normal idle reading is the classic signature of a thermostat that opens late or a partially blocked radiator core, not a failed water pump. Test the thermostat in a pot first, then inspect the cores for external dust between the fins, and only then look at the pump. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes the thermostat VA3434611500 with its sensor VAME049209 as separate low-cost lines.
How do I tell whether the engine or the hydraulics is overheating?
Read both temperatures rather than one. Excavators normally stack the engine coolant radiator, the hydraulic oil cooler and the charge air cooler in the same airflow, so a machine can run hot because the hydraulic system is rejecting heat. If the hydraulic oil is hot and the coolant follows it, the fault belongs to the hydraulic circuit; if the coolant is hot while the hydraulic oil is normal, work the cooling chain.
When is a Kobelco water pump actually the problem?
When you can see or measure it: play at the shaft, coolant weeping from the seal drain, or an impeller eroded by cavitation. A pump that turns freely with no leak and no play is rarely the cause of overheating, and replacing it first simply hides the real fault for a season. Our shelf carries the water pump lines J361-0034C / VH161004290A / VH16100E0070 and VH16100E0770.
What should I check before ordering any cooling part?
Three cheap things: coolant level and cap pressure, external blockage between the cores, and thermostat operation. A cap that no longer holds pressure alone can make a healthy machine boil, and replacements such as C-22 / YN05P00088S032J / YN05P00010S006J cost very little. Only after those three are eliminated does the fan VA32G4800201, the belt VA3434904400 or the pump become a sensible order.
