Storing Kobelco Parts Correctly: Shelf Life, Humidity and Handling for Seals, Filters and Electronics

A part that has sat for three years in the wrong place is a used part. How to store seals, filters, hoses, controllers and hydraulic components so the number on the box is still the quality you paid for.

Every large parts stock is older than its owner thinks. A seal that has hung on a nail for four years, a filter carton that has stood in a humid corner, a controller that has spent two summers in a hot container — all of them were genuine parts when they were bought, and none of them is a genuine part at the moment of fitting. Degradation does not announce itself, which is why a stock can be perfectly organised and still deliver failures. This is how the technical team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. stores each class of part.

Rubber never stops ageing

Seals, O-rings, diaphragms and hoses are the parts most often ruined by storage, because rubber ages continuously from the day it is made whether or not it is used. Four things drive that ageing: heat, ultraviolet light, ozone and oxygen. Keep rubber out of direct sunlight; store it in sealed bags or closed cabinets rather than open bins; keep it away from electric motors and welding sets, which generate ozone; and rotate stock so the oldest seal is used first. A line such as our hydraulic oil seal reference XZ0532E / LC32W01033P1C should carry a date on the bag rather than a place on a board.

Filtration and electronics: keep them dry and sealed

Part classWhat destroys it in storageStorage rule
Filter elements (oil, fuel, hydraulic return)Humidity and dust in the pleats; damaged end capsSealed carton, stored flat, nothing heavy on top
Fuel and water separatorsMoisture drawn into the elementSealed, dry, first-in first-out; do not open until fitting
Air filter assembliesCrushed pleats and housing distortionUpright, original packaging, coolest part of the store
Hydraulic components (pumps, motors, relief valves)Internal corrosion of machined surfacesPorts plugged, indoors, oil film retained
ECU, controllers, sensorsMoisture at connectors, heat cycles, physical shockOriginal anti-static packaging with desiccant, off concrete
Hoses and hose assembliesOzone, sunlight, sharp bends, coil-set memoryWide-radius racks or long coils, capped, out of sunlight

The controller row deserves emphasis because it is the newest problem in most stores. Controllers and sensors are now a routine line on an SK-10 class service order — LC22E00336F8 / LC22E00323F8 is catalogued for the SK350-10 and YN22E00694F8 for the SK200-10, SK210-10 and SK220-10 — and they store badly. A sealed bag with desiccant costs almost nothing next to a module that has to be replaced before it is ever fitted.

Rotate the stock, and write the date on the bag

The single most effective storage practice is not a shelf or a cabinet; it is a date. Any part whose quality changes with time should be marked with its arrival date on receipt and consumed oldest first. That one habit turns storage from a hope into a system, and it is why a store holding 3,000 part types on the shelf can still promise a seal that behaves like a new one.

Shenyue tip: if a machine is parked for a season, store it with the cylinders retracted and the exposed rod protected — a rod left extended in humid air for months will pit, and the seal running over it fails within weeks of restart. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. keeps its own stock in four warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, with rubber, filtration and electronics held under separate conditions, and ships items such as XZ0532E / LC32W01033P1C and the sensor line LS52S00046P1 in sealed packaging with the dispatch date recorded.

What this means when you order

Two consequences follow. Buy rubber and filtration close to the fitting date rather than in one large annual purchase, because a lower unit price is not a saving if the parts age on your shelf. When stock has been held a long time, ask for it to be supplied fresh. A supplier that dates its stock and rotates it will say so without hesitation.

Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has specialised in Kobelco parts since 2007, with 4 warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels. Shenyue is an independent supplier of excavator parts and is not an authorized dealer or distributor of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; for Kobelco, Hino, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins, Kawasaki, Nabtesco, KYB and KPM we supply genuine parts ordered through original supply channels alongside quality replacement alternatives, at prices close to agent level, and the five brands we hold formal authorization for — Mitsubishi, Garrett, TONGMYUNG, Marusan and NIKURA — are named on every quotation. Compare this with the fleet stocking approach in our SK-8 fleet spare parts plan, browse filters and lubricants and electrical parts, or ask for a dated stock quotation. Seal storage reference data is published by NOK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do excavator hydraulic seals have a shelf life?

Yes. Rubber ages continuously from manufacture through heat, ultraviolet light, ozone and oxygen, whether or not the part is ever fitted, so a seal stored badly for several years may fail within weeks of installation. Store seals in sealed bags or closed cabinets, out of sunlight and away from electric motors and welding sets, and consume oldest stock first. Our hydraulic oil seal reference XZ0532E / LC32W01033P1C is quoted with a dispatch date for this reason.

How should ECU controllers and sensors be stored?

In original anti-static packaging with desiccant, indoors, off a concrete floor and away from heat cycles and physical shock. Moisture at the connector is the usual cause of a module that fails soon after fitting. These lines are now routine on SK-10 class service orders — LC22E00336F8 / LC22E00323F8 is catalogued for the SK350-10 and YN22E00694F8 for the SK200-10, SK210-10 and SK220-10.

Is it cheaper to buy a year of filters at once?

Not usually. Filtration and rubber are the two classes where a lower unit price can be cancelled out by storage ageing, because elements draw moisture and rubber hardens over the same months. For a high-consumption fleet, buying two quarters ahead is a reasonable compromise; buying twelve months of seals to save a few percent is usually a net loss.

How should a machine be stored between jobs?

With the cylinders retracted wherever possible and any exposed rod protected, the fuel tank full to limit condensation, batteries isolated or removed if freezing is likely, and breathers and openings capped so moisture and insects cannot enter. A rod left extended in humid air for months will pit, and the seal running over it fails within weeks of restart.
