Travel complaints arrive in three shapes, and owners tend to treat them as one problem: the machine walks slowly on both tracks, drags or stops on one track only, or is fine on the flat but creeps down a slope with the levers centred. These are different faults with different answers, and none of them is automatically a worn-out travel motor. This is the order the technical team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. works through.
Split the complaint before you touch a spanner
Three questions separate the causes in a few minutes: is the fault on one track or both, does it change with oil temperature, and does it happen under load, on a slope, or simply walking on the flat? The answers map onto different parts of the same circuit.
| What the operator reports | Where to look first |
|---|---|
| Both tracks slow, all the time | Shared side: pilot pressure, main relief setting, engine speed, pump delivery |
| One track slow or dead | That track's pilot line or travel pilot valve, then its motor and brake |
| Fine cold, weak when hot | A restriction or internal wear passing thinner hot oil |
| Creeps down a slope, levers centred | Brake drag or a weeping counterbalance on that motor |
| Track drags while turning | Brake not fully released, or a restricted pilot line to that side |
| Jerks and stalls under load | Relief instability or a partially blocked return path |
Work in this order
- Confirm it is travel-only. If the attachment functions are also lazy the fault is upstream in the pilot circuit, and a dirty pilot filter reproduces this symptom exactly — the inline filter we hold is YN50V00020F1.
- Compare the two tracks. Swap the travel pilot lines left to right. If the fault follows the line, the motor is innocent. The travel pilot valve we hold is YN30V00080F1 / YY30V00061F2 / 10181-0000A.
- Check main relief setting. A weakened or misadjusted main relief makes both tracks slow under load while everything else looks normal. Our lines include YN22V00001F4 / LC22V00011F1 / V9701310053-T.
- Test the parking brake release. A brake that does not release fully produces exactly what owners describe as "the motor is going" — slow travel, heat in the reduction housing, and a track that fights you when you turn. Measure brake release pressure at the motor rather than assuming.
- Assess the counterbalance and relief separately from the motor. Creep on a slope with the levers centred points at the counterbalance or the motor's own relief. The travel motor relief we hold is C2259321450501 / LC22V00006F1, a normal service part rather than a sign that the assembly has failed.
- Only now the motor internals. If the brake releases, the relief and counterbalance are sound and the track is still weak, the swash and block surfaces are the remaining suspects — block C2162221251701 / LC15V00023S040, ball guide C2162420488601 / LC15V00023S042 and swash C2162122059801 are all held separately.
Why the small parts get skipped
Nothing in this circuit is expensive except the motor, and that asymmetry causes the waste. A relief valve, a pilot valve and a filter together cost a small fraction of an assembly, and one of them is the answer in a large share of slow-travel complaints. A fleet that holds one pilot filter and one travel relief per machine removes most of the downtime from this failure mode without carrying a single spare motor.
Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has specialised in Kobelco parts since 2007, with 4 warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels. Shenyue is an independent supplier of excavator parts and is not an authorized dealer or distributor of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; for Kobelco, Hino, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins, Kawasaki, Nabtesco, KYB and KPM we supply genuine parts ordered through original supply channels alongside quality replacement alternatives, at prices close to agent level, and the five brands we hold formal authorization for — Mitsubishi, Garrett, TONGMYUNG, Marusan and NIKURA — are named on every quotation. Compare this with the tracking problem in our travel deviation diagnosis guide, browse hydraulic components, or send your readings for a quotation. Fluid-power reference data is published by SKF.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Kobelco walks slowly on both tracks. Is the travel motor worn out?
Usually not. A fault affecting both tracks at once points to something the two sides share: pilot pressure, the main relief setting, engine speed or pump delivery. Measure pilot pressure and check the pilot inline filter YN50V00020F1 first, because a restricted pilot filter reproduces the symptom precisely. Only then does it make sense to suspect a motor, and only on the side that is actually weak.
What causes a Kobelco to creep down a slope with the levers centred?
Two candidates, both at the motor rather than in it: the parking brake not releasing fully, or a weeping counterbalance allowing oil past. The travel motor relief we hold is C2259321450501 / LC22V00006F1 and it is a normal service part. Measure brake release pressure at the motor before ordering anything, because a brake fault and a counterbalance fault are fixed differently.
How do I tell a travel pilot fault from a travel motor fault?
Race the two sides. If the symptom follows the pilot line when you swap left to right, the motor is innocent and the fault is in the pilot valve or its line — our travel pilot valve reference is YN30V00080F1 / YY30V00061F2 / 10181-0000A. If the weakness stays with the same track regardless of the lines, the fault is at that motor's brake, relief or internals.
At what point should the travel motor be replaced rather than repaired?
When the brake releases correctly, the relief and counterbalance test sound, and the track is still weak with the housing already showing wear. Even then the internals are often all that is needed: block C2162221251701 / LC15V00023S040, ball guide C2162420488601 / LC15V00023S042 and swash C2162122059801 are held as separate lines. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes the small parts first and the assembly only as an option.
