Undercarriage is the largest single consumable on an excavator and the category where the most money is spent and the most is wasted. The components do not wear independently: a stretched chain destroys rollers, a worn sprocket destroys links, a seized idler destroys the front of the frame, and a set of worn-out track shoes is often the last visible symptom of something that began 2,000 hours earlier. Buying them one failure at a time is the expensive way to do it. This is the wear logic and the measurement discipline the technical team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. applies across the Kobelco range.
The five components and what each one does
- Track chain, links and pins. Carry the machine and transfer drive. Wear shows as pitch elongation, which is measurable and is the single most useful number on the undercarriage.
- Sprocket. Transmits drive to the chain. Worn sprocket teeth accelerate chain pitch wear — the two fail together and are best renewed together.
- Track rollers and carrier rollers. Carry the chain and guide it. Exposed to mud, water and abrasion; usually destroyed by a failed seal long before the bearing collapses.
- Idler and its shaft. Guides the chain at the front and takes shock loads. A seized idler is a track-off event, not a gradual degradation. A stocked example from our shelf is the idler shaft quoted as VA32F2303402.
- Track shoes and bolts. Ground contact. On rock and demolition duty, shoe bolts fatigue and fail before the links wear out, which is why bolt condition belongs on the inspection list.
Wear as a system, not as five parts
| If this is worn | Then expect this to follow |
|---|---|
| Chain pitch elongation beyond the limit | Accelerated sprocket, roller and idler wear across the whole undercarriage |
| Worn sprocket teeth | Chain riding high on the tooth, faster pin and bushing wear, chain jumping under load |
| Seized carrier roller or track roller | Flat spots on the roller shell, chain wear, and eventually a link that fails at that position |
| Seized or loose idler | Front frame and recoil area damage; chain jumping at the sprocket |
| Track tension too tight | Roller, idler, pin and bushing wear on every component at once |
The pattern is always the same: one out-of-specification component makes every other component wear faster, so the cost of delay is multiplicative rather than additive.
What to measure, in order
- Chain pitch elongation. Measured over a set number of links against the manual's figure. This single number tells you whether you are looking at a chain change or a system change.
- Sprocket tooth and root condition. Photograph from above so the root profile is visible; that is where the assessment is made.
- Roller and idler condition. Check for a leaking seal, play, a seized shell and heat after working. A roller running hot has already lost its lubrication.
- Link height and bushing wear, shoes and bolts. Links for wear and cracking, shoes for wear and missing bolts.
- Track tension, cold. Set it to the manual's figure, on the specified surface, rather than to what looks right.
Where it is worth paying more
Undercarriage grades vary more than almost any other category, and the right decision is different at each position. On the chain and the sprocket, the labour and downtime to change them dwarfs the price difference between grades, so the best available is usually the cheapest decision over the life of the machine. On exposed rollers, idler wheels and shoes, which are cheap to replace and frequently damaged by the environment, a good OEM-quality or aftermarket part is a rational purchase. What is not rational is an unlabelled link or roller where a failure stops the machine in the field. Every line we quote states its grade as genuine, OEM-quality or aftermarket in writing, and reports the wear limit that applies so the decision is made on figures rather than on appearance.
Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has specialised in Kobelco parts since 2007 — nearly 20 years in the trade — with 4 warehouses over 1000 m² in Guangzhou, 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels. Shenyue is an independent supplier of excavator parts and is not an authorized dealer or distributor of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; for Kobelco, Hino, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins, Kawasaki, Nabtesco, KYB and KPM we supply genuine parts ordered through original supply channels alongside quality replacement alternatives, at prices close to agent level. The five brands we hold formal authorization for — Mitsubishi, Garrett, TONGMYUNG, Marusan and NIKURA — are named on the quotation. Browse the undercarriage and cylinders category, see the class on the SK250 model page, and read the class-by-class differences in our SK250-8 and SK260LC-8 parts guide. Manufacturer machine data is published by Kobelco.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when a Kobelco undercarriage needs replacing rather than adjusting?
Measure the chain pitch elongation over a set number of links against the manual's figure, then check the sprocket root profile, roller and idler condition, and track tension cold. Pitch elongation beyond the limit means the chain itself is finished, and a worn sprocket will consume its replacement quickly. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes the undercarriage as a set by machine class so the whole system can be assessed on one document.
Which undercarriage parts wear first on a Kobelco?
It depends on the ground. On rock and demolition duty, track shoes and their bolts fail first, followed by sprocket teeth and chain pitch. In mud and water, the exposed rollers and idlers fail first because their seals give up and the bearing follows. In every case the wear is multiplicative: one out-of-specification component makes every other component wear faster. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes stocked items such as the idler shaft VA32F2303402 alongside the matching wear parts.
Should I buy genuine or aftermarket undercarriage parts for a Kobelco?
It depends on the position. On the chain and sprocket, where the labour and downtime to change them dwarfs the price difference, the best available grade is usually the cheapest decision over the machine's life. On exposed rollers, idler wheels and shoes, a good OEM-quality or aftermarket part is rational. Every line quoted by Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. states its grade as genuine, OEM-quality or aftermarket in writing.
What should I send to get an accurate undercarriage quotation?
Send the machine model and serial number and photographs of each component as it sits on the machine, plus the chain pitch measurement if you have taken it, the quantity and the destination port. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. then quotes the set by machine class with the grade of every line declared, and if a reference is commonly quoted rather than fully confirmed it is flagged before shipping.
