Every week a buyer sends us a photograph of a used travel motor with a price attached and asks whether it is a good deal. The honest answer is that the photograph cannot tell us. A used hydraulic component is worth what its internals are worth, and the internals are exactly what nobody photographs. The word "tested" in a used-parts listing can mean anything from a bench run against a flow spec to "it moved when we took it off the machine". This guide explains the three grades that get sold under one word, which components are worth buying used on a Kobelco, and the evidence Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. would want before paying for one.
Three grades sold under one word
Used, salvage and take-off describe three different things. A take-off is a component removed from a machine that was working, usually because the machine was scrapped or converted; its history is short and its failure risk is unknown but bounded. Salvage is a component removed from a wreck or a fire, where the housing may be sound and the internals may not. A rebuilt or remanufactured unit is a different product entirely: worn parts replaced to a specification, usually with a warranty, and priced accordingly — our guide to core exchange and remanufactured units sets out how that scale works. Treating all three as "used" is how buyers end up comparing a remanufactured swing motor with a salvage one on price alone.
What is worth buying used, and what is not
| Component | Used verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Brackets, covers, guards, steps | Safe | No wear surface, no pressure, easy to inspect |
| Cab shell, doors, glass frames | Usually safe | Inspect hinges, seals and rust; interiors are cheap to replace |
| Swing reduction, final drive gears | Only with an inspection report | Gear and bearing condition cannot be judged from outside |
| Travel motor assembly (GM38VB / GM38VC) | Risky | Internal wear decides everything; GM38VB and GM38VC are not interchangeable |
| Main hydraulic pump | Avoid unless bench-tested | A worn pump passes a no-load test and fails in the first week of work |
| Injectors, common-rail components | Do not buy used | No way to verify spray pattern or calibration outside a test bench |
The number trap on travel motors
The Kobelco 20-tonne class is where used travel motors cause the most damage, because two generations look alike and do not interchange. The SK200-8 and SK210-8 use the Nabtesco GM38VB motor, quoted as assembly YN15V00037F1, YN15V00037F2 or YN15V00037F3, with internals such as 800D2103-00 / YN15V00037R420C and C800D2016-00 / YN15V00037S116. The SK200-10, SK210-10 and SK220XD-10 use the GM38VC, quoted as YN15V00083F1. They are not interchangeable, and a used unit sold as "fits SK200" without a generation qualifier should be treated as unidentified until the plate on the motor says otherwise — the same discipline that our genuine versus counterfeit guide applies to new parts.
Evidence to demand before you pay
For anything hydraulic, ask for four things: a photograph of the component plate, a photograph of the internals with the unit opened, a measured case drain or flow figure if the seller claims it was tested, and the machine serial it came from. For anything structural, ask for photographs of every wear surface and a measurement where a measurement exists. A seller who cannot supply the plate photograph does not know what they are selling, and a seller who will not open a motor is asking you to take the entire risk. Checking a plate against the manufacturer's own model documentation, which Kobelco publishes at kobelco.co.jp, is the fastest way to catch a mis-described unit before money moves. On our side, when we supply a used or take-off item, the quotation says so explicitly and states the condition we inspected, because "used" is a description and not a warranty.
The export angle
Buyers sourcing for resale have one more consideration: documentation. A used component shipped without a plate photograph and a serial cannot be warranted downstream, and a container of mixed used parts without itemized paperwork is a customs conversation waiting to happen. For buyers who consolidate Kobelco, Hino and other brands into one shipment, our export brand corbayparts.com handles mixed-brand consolidation from the same Guangzhou warehouse, while the Kobelco-specific documentation stays with the Shenyue team and is quoted through part number search. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has run this trade since 2007, holds 3,000+ part types on the shelf and has 100,000+ part numbers available to order, and every quotation states whether an item is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a used travel motor for an SK200-8 worth buying?
Only with the internals inspected and the plate photographed. GM38VB motors (YN15V00037F1 / F2 / F3) and the later GM38VC (YN15V00083F1) look alike and do not interchange, so a listing that says only "fits SK200" is unidentified. Compare the used price against the internal parts it will need — 800D2103-00 / YN15V00037R420C and a seal set — before deciding. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes all three options on one sheet.
What does 'tested' mean for a used hydraulic component?
It should mean the unit was run against a measurable specification — flow at a stated pressure, or case drain against a wear limit — and that the figure is available to you. If a seller cannot state the test and the result, the word means nothing. Ask for the component plate photograph, the machine serial and the test figure before paying.
Do you sell used parts yourself?
We supply used and take-off items when they are the right answer for the buyer, and every quotation states the condition and whether the line is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used. For critical hydraulic components we usually recommend internal parts kits or remanufactured units instead, because the risk sits with the buyer for the whole service life. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. has traded Kobelco parts since 2007.
