Two different faults produce the same complaint. One is an engine that has genuinely worn out its rings and liners; the other is a crankcase breathing system that cannot breathe any more. They are separated by measurement rather than opinion, and getting that call right decides whether a customer spends a small amount on breather parts or plans a full overhaul. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. sets out here the order of checks we use when a J05E or J08E machine starts drinking oil and pushing it out of the breather.
Define the symptom properly first
Oil consumption only means something as a rate: litres per 100 operating hours, measured over at least two oil changes with the machine working normally. A machine that spent a week on a long climb and one that has been on a breaker for a month will report very different numbers, and neither is a fault. Record the rate, the hours, the duty and the ambient temperature before touching anything, because a rate inside the maker's allowance tells you the engine is behaving.
The three places oil actually goes
Oil leaves an engine in three ways: past the outside, past the valve guides and stems, or past the piston rings into the combustion chamber. They look different. An external leak leaves a trail. Valve guide wear shows at start-up — a puff of blue on the first seconds after a cold start, then clean running. Ring and liner wear shows as continuous consumption under load, with oil leaving through the exhaust and entering the intake through the breather.
Blow-by or breather: the test that decides it
Crankcase pressure is the measurement that separates the two. With the engine warm and at rated speed, remove the oil filler cap or the breather hose and feel and measure the flow. A worn engine pulses hard and steadily, and the pressure does not fall away as the engine warms up. A blocked breather behaves the other way round: pressure builds with time and then drops sharply the moment the hose is opened. Check the breather and its separator first, because it is cheap, it is the more common fault on machines working in dust, and a blocked one raises crankcase pressure until oil is pushed out of every seal on the engine.

Top-end or full overhaul
A machine with even consumption, good oil pressure, no knocking and a leakage result that is uniform but high across all cylinders is a candidate for a top-end set: liners, pistons, rings, bearings and the gasket kit, with the head checked while it is off. A machine with one cylinder far out of line, low oil pressure or a knock in the bottom end needs the crankshaft measured as well, which is a different quotation and a longer downtime. Either way, plan the work into a scheduled gap rather than a failure — an engine stopped by a bearing is a recovery, not a repair.
If you run several machines of the same family, hold one liner and gasket set on the shelf against the day one of them starts breathing. Whether the answer turns out to be a top-end set or a full overhaul, Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes the whole job as one list so that nothing is discovered halfway through. Fleet planning for this class is covered in our J05E engine rebuild guide and in the J05E, J08E and P11C engine parts guide, and the consumables around the engine are listed in the engine parts range. International buyers comparing grades before a rebuild will find the same lines on our export catalogue site, corbayparts.com. Breathing and lubrication limits for these engine families are published by Hino, and anything unresolved is fastest answered through contact with the plate photographs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much oil consumption is normal on a J05E?
There is no single figure, because it depends on hours, duty and load, which is why the maker's allowance is expressed as a rate over time. Measure litres per 100 hours across at least two oil changes and compare it with the specification for your engine build. A rising trend under the same duty is the signal that matters, not a one-off number.
Does a blocked breather really look like worn rings?
Yes, and it is the cheaper of the two possibilities to rule out. A blocked breather or separator raises crankcase pressure, which then pushes oil out of seals and into the intake and produces the same visible symptoms. Check and clean the breather first. Our records quote the injector cover seal as VH2368178030 / VHS230741070 when a leak at the cover is part of the picture.
Which parts does a liner and ring job need?
Typically liners, pistons, rings, main and connecting rod bearings, and a complete gasket kit. Our records quote the piston ring as VA32R1701010 / VA3212701010 / VA3431707010, the liners as VA3430710500 / VA3430700501 and VH11463E0020 / VH114673140A, and the overhaul gasket kits as VH04111E0H53 / VHS040104187 and VHS040104264 / VH040103983.
How do I know whether to do a top-end or a full overhaul?
From a compression or leakage test per cylinder, oil pressure at operating temperature, and whether the bottom end knocks. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. asks for those three results with the hour meter and the oil consumption rate, then quotes the kit that matches; every line is declared genuine, OEM or aftermarket before it ships.
