Rainy Season Protection for Kobelco Machines: Water Finds the Parts You Forgot

Monsoon months punish the parts nobody checks: connectors, breathers, fuel tanks and starter motors. A practical rainy-season routine for SK-series machines working or parked in wet months.

Every year the rainy season writes the same repair orders: starter motors full of water, connectors green with corrosion, fuel tanks growing contamination, hydraulic tanks breathing wet air. None of these failures are dramatic — they are slow, wet and entirely seasonal. The machines that come through the monsoon months cheaply are the ones whose owners ran a short routine before the rain arrived.

Connectors and harnesses first

Water does not need to flood a connector to kill it — condensation inside the shell is enough. Before the wet months, open the connectors you can reach, look for green pins, and protect the vulnerable ones. The connectors that matter most are the low ones: chassis harness plugs, sensor connectors near the slew ring, anything in the splash zone of the tracks. A machine that starts throwing intermittent electrical faults in July is usually telling you about water that entered in June. Dielectric grease on open connectors is a five-minute job that prevents a five-day harness hunt.

Fuel and hydraulic tanks: water rides the air

Tanks breathe. Every temperature cycle pumps humid air in and out, and the water in that air condenses on the cool walls and sinks into the oil and fuel. Rainy-season discipline is simple and boring: drain the fuel tank water trap every morning before startup, not every week; check the hydraulic tank breather so the tank breathes through its filter and not past a seal; and keep tanks full overnight — a full tank has less air in it, and less air means less condensation. The fuel system is the least forgiving: water in diesel reaches the injectors and the pump, and the repair order reads very differently from a drained water trap.

The parts that drown

Starter motors and alternators sit low and swallow splash water. Machines that work standing in water — paddy fields, riverbanks, flooded sites — need these units checked after every wet stretch, because a starter that got wet today starts fine today and dies in a month when the corrosion finishes its work. If a machine has genuinely waded deep, treat every low-mounted electrical unit as suspect: dry them, test them, and note which ones you will be ordering. The alternator numbers are on our charging system guide if it comes to that.

Parked machines need the most protection

A working machine dries itself with heat; a parked machine marinates. If machines stand through the wet months, grease every pin and bushing until fresh grease shows, exercise the cylinders weekly so rods do not rust in one position, park on planks or stone rather than soil, and cover the cab. A machine parked badly for one wet season arrives at the next season with pitted cylinder rods, stiff pins and a harness full of surprises — a parts order that was entirely avoidable.

What we stock for the wet months
