Snow and Ice Work: What a Kobelco Needs Before the First Freeze

Winter work changes attachments, oil viscosity, cooling and undercarriage loads at the same time. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. covers snow buckets and blades, cold hydraulic warm-up, thermostat and coolant checks, and the parts that fail in ice.

A thermostat from our shelf. A stuck-open thermostat shows up as a cold-running engine and no cab heat, which is a winter fault long before it is a summer one.

Snow work is not simply summer work at a lower temperature. The attachment changes, the hydraulic oil thickens, the cooling system runs at a different point, and the undercarriage spends its day packed with ice. Machines prepared as if it were July fail in the first cold snap, and the failures are predictable. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies winter preparation parts to customers in northern China, Central Asia and northern Europe, and the list below is the one we work from.

Attachment choice decides the job

A standard digging bucket is the wrong tool for snow. It is narrow, it has teeth that catch on kerbs and expansion joints, and its volume is small for a light material. A snow bucket is wide, toothless, with a straight or slightly curved lip and a much larger volume for the same weight.

For hard-packed snow and ice, a dozer blade or a snow blade angled to one side is more productive than a bucket, because it cuts and rolls rather than scooping.

Cold oil and the warm-up nobody does

Hydraulic oil that is cold is thick, and thick oil does not enter a pump properly. Starting a machine at minus fifteen and immediately working it is the fastest way to cavitate a pump and to blow a seal that has gone hard. Warm up in stages: idle for several minutes, then work a single function slowly at low engine speed with no load, then add functions, and only then take load. Fifteen minutes of warm-up is cheaper than a pump.

Check the oil grade before winter, not after. A viscosity that is correct in summer can be marginal at low temperature, and the machine will tell you through slow functions, noisy pumps and stiff levers.

Fix the leaks before the freeze. A seal that weeps in October becomes a running leak in December. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies seal kits and hoses by part number, and replacing them in a heated workshop is a far better use of a winter week than replacing them in a snow trench.

Cooling, thermostat and coolant

The cooling system has two jobs in winter: keep the engine warm enough to burn cleanly and keep the cab heated. A thermostat that sticks open gives a cold-running engine, poor combustion, soot loading in the aftertreatment, and a cab that never warms up. The thermostat is a cheap part and a common winter fault; the VA3434611500 family is one of the numbers we hold.

Check the coolant concentration with a refractometer rather than by eye, top up with pre-mixed coolant rather than neat antifreeze, and inspect the radiator core for the salt and grit that winter roads throw up.

Starting, batteries and preheat

Test batteries before the season, clean and grease the terminals, and check the earth strap at the frame. If the machine has a block heater or a preheat system, test it now; a failed preheat relay is discovered on the coldest morning of the year.

Do not use ether or any starting aid on an engine with a preheat grid or an intake heater. The combination damages the intake system and is not what the manufacturer specifies for cold starting.

Undercarriage in ice and snow

Ice packs into the track links and around the bushings, and frozen pins resist movement until something yields. Clean the undercarriage at the end of a shift rather than at the start of the next one, because ice that freezes overnight sets hard. Never park on ice or a slope without chocking.

Grouser wear accelerates on abrasive frozen ground. Measure shoe height before the season, and check the track tension cold, following the cold-setting figure rather than the warm one.

Preparing the fleet in one week

Work through the machine once: oil grade, coolant concentration, thermostat, battery test, hose and seal inspection, undercarriage measurement, and a check that the cab heater and defrost actually work. Parts for the job are ordinary stock for us, three thousand part types on the shelf and over one hundred thousand part numbers available to order through original supply channels, each marked genuine, OEM or aftermarket.

The cold start and preheat guide covers the starting sequence, the oil viscosity guide covers grade selection, and the blade and edge guide covers blade hardware. Operators running mixed-brand fleets for municipal contracts usually source the non-Kobelco items through our export brand partner site corbayparts.com. Send your winter list through the contact page.

Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. is an independent supplier of Kobelco parts, not affiliated with Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. Genuine parts are supplied through original channels alongside quality OEM and aftermarket alternatives at distributor-level prices. Cold-weather operating limits for each model are published at kobelco.co.jp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a standard digging bucket for snow removal?

It works, badly. A digging bucket is narrow, has teeth that catch on kerbs and joints, and carries little volume for a light material. A wide toothless snow bucket clears in one pass. For hard-packed snow an angled blade is more productive again.

How long should a Kobelco warm up before working in freezing weather?

Idle for several minutes, then work one function slowly at low engine speed with no load, then add functions, and only then take load. Around fifteen minutes in total at minus ten or below. Cold oil is thick, does not enter the pump properly, and cavitation damages the pump long before the operator notices a problem.

Why does my engine run cold and the cab heater stay weak in winter?

Most often a thermostat stuck open, which also causes poor combustion and soot loading in the aftertreatment. The VA3434611500 family is one of the thermostats we hold. Check coolant concentration and clean the radiator core at the same time.

What happens to the undercarriage in snow and ice?

Ice packs into the links and around the bushings, and frozen pins resist movement until something yields. Clean the undercarriage at the end of each shift, set track tension to the cold figure, and measure grouser height before the season.
